The cope (known in Latin as pluviale 'rain coat' or cappa 'cape') is a liturgical vestment, more precisely a long mantle or cloak, open in front and fastened at the breast with a band or clasp. It may be of any liturgical color. Ars Sacra will work with you on finding the right fabric and design. A cope may be worn by any rank of the clergy, and also by lay ministers in certain circumstances. If worn by a bishop it is generally accompanied by a mitre. The clasp, which is often highly ornamented, is called a morse. Ars Sacra uses the finest damask fabrics upon which they have embroidered a beautiful gold border and back. The morse is ornamental and is adjustable for the wearer. Historically copes have had a hood that is now evolved into a decorative back panel. The garment is gorgeous. I chose my cope to be unlined for lighter weight. The inside fabric matches exactly with the outside fabric. I chose the Gothic cope which is more rounded and does not have shoulder seams. Nowadays churches generally use four basic colors but Ars Sacra has a wide variety of colors and designs which were more commonly used throughout tradition. My forth cope is a pure true white exactly as I requested. I did not want cream, off white or beige. Ars Sacra didn't disappoint. I got to wear it on Christmas Day and got many compliments on the beauty and craftsmanship. The cope also comes with a complimentary stole.
